Our symposium on Azad Jammu and Kashmir focuses on this underresearched and underdiscussed area of the Kashmir dispute and provides some valuable insights into the region, its issues, and how we can overcome them. Pakistan needs to engage in discourse and research on this region because myth-busting is required regarding its status both constitutionally and under international law. While some argue that Pakistan is occupying the territory and is committing human rights violations there akin to those in Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir, this argument does not hold water. The articles we host as part of this symposium discusses this as well as other issues the territory faces within the context of its disputed status but also outside it, namely issues of tourism and the diaspora.
